Definition 

figure of speech is an expression or figure of speech used for literacy needs both oral and written.  Figure of speech serves to beautify English words which are usually used for writing poetry, poetry, and even prose.

Function 

is for a few sentences to make it more beautiful and interesting.

In figure of speech, sentences that are written sometimes do not contain a literal meaning but are only as expressions.


Type 



1. Alliteration
Is a figure of speech that has a function to beautify the types of English sentences.  One of the characteristics of alliterations is that they have repeated consonant sentences.  Example:
  • The wild walrus waits and wonders when we’ll walk by.
  • She sells seashells.
  • Walter wondered where Winnie was.
  • Blue baby bonnets bobbed through the bayou.
  • Nick needed new notebooks.
  • Fred fried frogs’ legs on Friday.
2. Metaphore
Is a figure of speech that is used to compare something or an idea.  For example:
  • Heart of stone
  • Time is money
  • The world is a stage
  • She’s a night owl
  • He’s an ogre
3. Hyperbole
A Hyperbole is a figure of speech that is a grossly exaggerated description or statement. In literature , such exaggeration is used for emphasis or vivid description.
Here are some Examples :
  • I will die if I did not pass the exam.
  • The world ended the day my parents died
4. Simile
Simile is a figure of speech that compare one thing to another, but in simile the comparison is explicit, indicated by the adding or using the words of comparison such as like , as , resemble , etc.
Here are some examples :
  •  My love is like a red, red rose. 
  •  There is no frigate like a book
5.  Synecdoche
Synecdoche is a figure of speech that mentions part of a thing tosignify the
whole thing or users the whole to signify the part. Here are some examples :
  • I did not see your nose at the party last night 
  • A hundred wings flashed by
6. Metonymy
A figure of speech that uses a concept closely related to the thing actually meant. The substitution makes the analogy more vivid and meaningful.
Here are some Examples:
  • My sister always drink Aqua(Aqua means water). 309
  • He has Marlboroin his bag (Malboro means cigarette).

7. Symbol
The words of symbol mean merely what they are and something else that are
represented by the words. It means that a symbol uses a word or phrase which is familiar in society and has one meaning.
Here are some Examples:
  •  A dove stands for Peace
  • Red, symbol of braveness.

8. Apostrophe
A figure of speech in which someone absent or dead or something nonhuman is
addressed as if it were alive and present and often begins with the exclamation “O’’ or’’oh’’.
Here are some Examples :

  •  “Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are?”
9Onomatopoeia

the figure above is a figure of speech that phonetically imitates, resembles, or voices the sound it describes.

You can usually find this onomatopoeia in comic books when the creator tries to describe a sound from an object.

For example, when you see a picture in a comic that shows a shooting scene, you will understand that at that time a shooting scene was taking place when reading the onomatopoeia “DOR!”.


10. Paradox
Paradox is an apparent contradiction that is nevertheless somehow true . Here are some Example:
  •  He who loses his lifefor my sake will save it.
  •  One day is sometimes better thana whole year 

11. Irony
Irony is a figure of speech in which words are used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words.
Here are some Examples :
  •  My grave is like to be my wedding bed
  •  You are a smart student who always absent
